A Locavore in the Making

My name is Eileen and I like to eat locally. And by that I don't mean the McDonald's 1/4 miles down the street. I mean that I want my food to come to me from a source close to home so my food doesn't do more traveling than I do. I visited my local farmer's market (in Provo, UT) and found it to be seriously lacking. There was a handful of booths with some straggly fare, but mostly it was MLM folks or hippie tie-dye offerings - not that those aren't fun too, but they're not going to make a very good dinner for me and my family. So this year, I'm going to (with the help of my friends) start improving the local farmer's market so that maybe we can start to get folks coming to it which will entice other local growers to bring their crops down as well. I'm planning to try Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening as my method of choice and we'll be growing a variety of hearty hybrids as well as some unusual heirlooms. Additionally, we're going to look into rules and regs about offering artisan breads (from a home kitchen vs. a commercial one) and see if we can't really vamp up the whole-foods market this coming season. So join me and my friends in our journey to bring some variety and flair to our local community!
